The MC14046B is a phase locked loop containing two phase comparators, a voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO), source follower, and zener diode. It features buffered outputs compatible with low-power TTL, diode protection on all inputs, and a wide supply voltage range from 3.0 V to 18 V. The device is pin-for-pin compatible with the CD4046B. Phase Comparator 1 is an exclusive OR gate with duty cycle limitation, maintaining 90° phase shift at center frequency. Phase Comparator 2 uses leading edge sensing and maintains 0° phase shift. The linear VCO frequency is controlled by input voltage and external components. An inhibit input disables the VCO and source follower for low standby power. The zener diode assists in power supply regulation. Applications include FM/FSK modulation, frequency synthesis, tone decoding, and motor speed control.
