PCB Placement and Routing: Floorplan to DRC Review

PCB Placement and Routing: A Review Sequence from Floorplan to DRC

    Author: Lucy Lu | Published for icallin.com | Updated: October 21, 2026

PCB placement and routing work best as a fixed sequence: lock the mechanical features, place functional blocks, choose the layer stack, route critical signals, complete power and general routing, then run checks. Placement decides which routing options remain practical, so getting connectors, critical blocks, thermal paths and references right first saves the most rework.

A clean-looking board is not evidence that electrical and manufacturing requirements are met. Each stage below has its own review question and its own owner.

Table 1. Placement and routing review sequence with the main checks at each stage.

Place the fixed features and functional regions

Start with the board outline, mounting positions, mechanical clearances and any connector whose location the product dictates. Account for component height, cable access and enclosure features before arranging circuits.

Good PCB component placement groups parts by the circuits they form. Keep an analog input stage close to its filter and converter, and keep fast digital routes out of that region. Partition by placement over one continuous ground plane; the plane itself stays intact.

Place bypass capacitors next to the supply pins they serve, with a short path to the ground plane. The quantity to minimize is the area of the complete current loop.

For a high-speed interface, place the driver, termination parts and connector so the channel can be routed directly, without detours or extra vias.

Plan heat flow alongside the electrical layout

Identify parts with significant dissipation and plan their heat path to copper, thermal vias, interface material, airflow or a heatsink. Keep temperature-sensitive parts, such as references, crystals and electrolytic capacitors, away from hot regions.

Put hot parts where the cooling actually is. A board edge helps when it touches a metal enclosure or sits in airflow; in a sealed plastic case, a large internal copper area may do more. Use the device's thermal guidance and confirm with analysis or measurement.

Reserve room for thermal pads, via arrays and copper pours before routing fills the space.

Figure 1. Review component relationships before detailed routing. This is a conceptual floorplan, not a finished copper layout or an impedance-controlled geometry.

Choose the PCB layer stack before routing critical nets

The PCB layer stack decides which reference plane sits next to each signal layer, what geometry is available for impedance control and how power is distributed. Agree it with the fabricator and material system before routing.

    Common starting points:

    • Four layers, S-G-P-S. Signal, ground, power, signal. Simple power distribution; the bottom signal layer references the power plane, so its layer changes need stitching capacitors.
    • Four layers, S-G-G-S. Two ground planes give both outer layers a ground reference; power is routed as wide traces or pours on the signal layers.
    • Six layers, S-G-S-P-G-S. Each signal layer sits next to a plane, with room for dedicated power and ground.

For each critical signal, note which plane it references and what happens at each layer change. Confirm dielectric thicknesses and copper weights with the fabricator rather than judging the board by layer count.

Critical signal routing with return path continuity

Ensure high-speed trace topologies comply with PCB EMC design practices, and use high frequency PCB routing problems diagnostics to catch impedance discontinuities.

Critical signal routing comes first: nets with tight timing, noise or impedance requirements. Keep these routes short and direct, with minimal transitions. Impedance depends on trace geometry, reference distance and dielectric, so take widths from the agreed stackup.

Maintain return path continuity: every critical route should run over unbroken reference copper, with a return via at each layer change. Never route a fast signal across a plane gap.

Take length-matching targets from the interface's timing budget and add serpentines only where they are needed, since unnecessary meanders add coupling and use space.

Route differential pairs to their interface rules for pair geometry, reference and skew. Keep sensitive nodes away from switching nodes, considering layer assignment as well as spacing.

For RF feeds and antennas, follow the antenna vendor's guidance on feed impedance, keep-out areas and nearby copper, and include the matching network footprint.

Complete power connections without losing the return path

Size power conductors from current, allowable voltage drop, temperature rise and copper weight. Review the return conductor with the same care as the supply.

Use planes and pours deliberately. Look for neck-downs, isolated islands and via congestion that funnel a wide pour into a narrow section.

Confirm that each decoupling capacitor, its supply pin and its return form a compact loop. Analog Devices' layout guidance emphasizes this link between placement and supply-loop layout.

Run design rule checks using the selected process rules

Configure design rule checks from the chosen fabricator's process: width, spacing, hole size, annular ring and copper-to-edge distance. Review every exception rather than just counting errors.

Size annular rings from the fabricator's drill and registration tolerance. Check drill-to-copper clearance, pad geometry and solder-mask openings together.

Keep silkscreen legible and off exposed pads, check mask openings and leave access for assembly tools, test probes and rework.

DRC confirms only the rules that have been encoded. Stackup suitability, thermal adequacy and interface timing need their own reviews, alongside net-connectivity checks and footprint verification.

Fix issues in a controlled revision, refill copper zones and rerun the affected checks. Release the board files, schematic and BOM together as one consistent package.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Should routing begin as soon as all components fit on the board?

No. First confirm connectors, thermal paths, sensitive regions, decoupling loops and critical channels. Changing placement after detailed routing costs far more time.

Which signals should be routed first?

Route clocks, high-speed differential pairs, RF feeds and sensitive analog inputs first, while the cleanest paths and reference areas are still free. Power and general-purpose signals follow.

Is a four-layer board enough for my design?

Often, yes. A four-layer stack with at least one solid ground plane handles most microcontroller, sensor and moderate-speed designs. Move to six layers when routing density, several high-speed interfaces or the power distribution need more reference planes.

    Conclusion

A disciplined layout review carries the relationships set during placement through routing and release. Check complete current paths and the manufacturing package alongside the automated rule results.
