These encoders emphasize high reliability, high resolution, and easy assembly. Each encoder contains a lensed LED source, an integrated circuit with detectors and output circuitry, and a codewheel which rotates between the emitter and detector IC. The outputs are two square waves in quadrature, with an optional third channel index output for some models. The HEDS series uses metal codewheels, while the HEDM series uses a film codewheel allowing resolutions up to 1024 CPR. They are designed for quick and easy mounting to motors, with external mounting ears available for larger diameter motors.
