Each device in this series, is a gallium aluminum arsenide infrared Light Emitting Diode (LED) that is molded in an IR-transmissive package with a wavelength centered at 890 nm, which closely matches the spectral response of silicon phototransistors, except for OP298 (AA, AB, AC, AD), which has either an 850 nm or 875 nm center wavelength.

The OP290 series are plastic infrared emitting diodes with a choice of narrow or wide irradiance pattern, power ranges, and packages (T-1¾, TO-18, or TO-46). They offer higher power output than GaAs LEDs. The series includes multiple sub-series (OP290, OP291, OP292, OP293, OP294, OP295, OP296, OP297, OP298, OP299) with different forward current specifications and emission angles. They are spectrally and mechanically matched to OP593 and OP598 series phototransistors. The devices are available with various electrical parameter options (A, B, C, D, AA, AB, AC, AD) and feature a silver-copper lead frame for excellent thermal characteristics.
